The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory is a multidisciplinary area consisting of Nurses, Radiographers and Cardiac technicians.

The laboratory responsibility is divided between three teams each having its own leader - Nurse team, Radiography team and the Technician team.

There are 4 rooms in which procedures take place.

Lab 1 is a Bi-Plane Lab
This enables two images of the heart to be taken at once.
In this room, the procedures performed are:- Angioplasties, Stents, Pacemakers, Internal Defibrillators and Valvuloplasties and some paediatric cases.

Lab 2 is a Bi-Plane Lab - as Lab 1
In this room the procedures performed are:-, All Electrophysiology Studies and Ablation, Angioplasties, Stents, Pacemakers, Internal Defibrillators and Valvuloplasties and some paediatric cases.

Lab 3 is a Swing Lab
This is one very large room with two X-ray tables but only one intensifier (camera). It has a movable partition in the middle, whilst one patient is having their procedure, another one can be prepared. This maximises the efficiency of the lab. In this room the procedures performed are:-, Angiograms, Angioplasties, Stents, Pacemakers and Internal Defibrillators.

Lab 4 is a single plane lab. This is the most up to date lab completed to date. Studies recorded in the lab are automatically recorded to an archive which then can be viewed by clinicians at their desks using a web browser.

The Cardiac Catheter Lab is a very busy department. It operates Monday to Friday but 24 hour cover is provided by an on-call service. As a working environment, it is a friendly and pleasant area in which to work. There are opportunities to visit other areas within the heart centre, and we offer the opportunity to expand staff skills, both practical and academic. All new members of staff are given an orientation programme, mentorship, objectives, teaching and regular appraisals. Staff are encouraged to become active link workers in many specialist areas.
